Birding
Gir National Park & Sanctuary is well represented in terms of rich avi-fauna. The riparian vegetation along streams and marshes is particularly rich as natural habitation of bird life. Apart from this, Gir National Park & Sanctuary has a variety of habitats, woodlands, grasslands, high hills, cliffs and ponds, catering to the needs of different bird species both resident and migratory. Around 350 avifaunal species are found here. This includes birds of prey, vultures, cormorants, ducks, kingfishers, herons, egrets, storks, barbets, woodpeckers, flycatchers and many others.
The overwhelming presence of the omnipotent big cat diverts the attention of the common man from the remarkable bird population that the sanctuary has. However, the birds of Gir National Park & Sanctuary did attract the great ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali who believed that, had the Asiatic lions not been there, the area would have been one of the most fascinating bird sanctuaries of the country.

Siddi Tribal Dance
Siddi, also known by the names of Sheedi is one of the tribal communities of Gir & Saurashtra region, while a few of them also live in parts of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. Most Siddis are believed to be the descendants of slaves, sailors, servants and merchants from the Bantu-speaking parts of East Africa. Their dance and music are quite exquisite and called “Dhamal”. Dhamaal is a mix of Sufi and African (mostly East African) musical and dance traditions. It refers particularly to the spiritual practices of the Siddis of Gujarat. Dhamaals are performed in memory of their spiritual leaders. An action-filled dance, the dancers are sometimes seen throwing coconuts in the air which fall on their heads and get broken into bits and pieces. Sometimes dancers even dance barefoot over burning embers.
